Nomination of Candidates

Nomination of Candidates

To be eligible for nomination, candidates must, on Nomination Day, be:

  1. At least 18 years old;
  2. A Canadian citizen;
  3. An Alberta resident on Election Day;
  4. A resident in Beaver County and in the Division in which you are being nominated for the 6 consecutive months immediately preceding Nomination Day;
  5. Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified under the Act.

Click here for the prescribed Nomination Form.  The Form must be filed before noon on Monday, September 20, 2021.    

The Nomination Form must be signed by the candidate and either signed by the Returning Officer or commissioned by a Commissioner for Oaths.  A nomination deposit of $100 must accompany the Nomination Form in the form of debit or credit card, money order, certified cheque, or cash.  The deposit may be returned to a candidate in accordance with Section 30 of the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).

It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the Nomination Form is filed in accordance with the Act.

The Returning Officer must review and sign the Nomination Form before it can be accepted.  Note that the Returning Officer shall not accept a nomination that is not completed in the prescribed form, is not signed by at least the minimum number of required persons, is not sworn or affirmed by the candidate, or is not accompanied by the required deposit.

Nomination forms will be accepted at the Beaver County Services Centre at Box 140, Ryley, T0B 4A0 or 5120 – 50th Street, Ryley.  If your Nomination Form is complete and you do not need to meet with the Returning Officer, you may submit the Form by mail, via the drop-box, or in person during regular business hours.

If you wish to submit your Nomination Form in person prior to September 1, 2021, please make an appointment with the Returning Officer.

To determine who is eligible to nominate a candidate, please review Section 27 of the LAEANote that a candidate must file a Nomination Form before accepting any contributions or incurring any campaign expenses.  For more information regarding campaign finances, refer to Part 5.1 of the LAEA.

A candidate may appoint an elector to be either the candidate's official agent or scrutineer.  Before performing his or her duties at the voting station, the scrutineer must present to the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer, the following documents:
a)  A written notice signed by the candidate, stating that the person presenting the notice is to represent that candidate as the candidate's scrutineer at the voting station.
b)  Form 16RSE (Statement of Scrutineer or Official Agent).

These documents must be in the possession of the agent or scrutineer when performing his/her duties.

NOTE: Even though the Alberta Government has lifted the public health restrictions related to COVID-19, you may meet residents who are exercising caution with the relaxation of restrictions.  You are advised to review Alberta Health Services' Guidance for Canvassing and Campaigning for respectful interaction between you (and your campaign staff and volunteers) and these residents.
